Mom’s Birthday

We threw mom a surprise party, lots of her friends came as well as people for Jared’s farewell. Nicole made these awesome cake pops for Mom’s Birthday. We also made her a cake that she could eat. Jordan and I got mom Lego Harry Potter Part 1 and Ryan bought another controller so mom and dad could play together.

the bomb bird slid down the stick.

Ryan and Rie watched Rio and watched Carson, Katie, and Natalie. Ryan kept taking Natalie from Rie :).

Monday-Saturday

Natalie was having fun with grandpa

She used to have such fat cheeks!

Saturday reading a book in the airport waiting to come home.

We had a super fun time visiting my family. It was so special to be able to be in the temple with everyone, and for Jared to go on a mission. I can hardly believe it has been almost a year since we last saw Jared. That means just one more year to go!

Trip to Utah 8.2011 (First Half)

Wed ,11/07/2012

Natalie got to ride a plane when she was just 6 weeks old! I used to think traveling on an airplane was a ton of fun, but kids kind of kill that. They also make traveling light very difficult. Natalie’s first plane ride wasn’t awful, but we were stuck on the tarmac for 20+ minutes waiting for the green light to take off. She was crying/screaming and it was really sad. We had a super nice flight attendant that said I could stand in the front until we were going to take off. She said that she had 7 kids and that sometimes it’s hard, it was a lot nicer than the “can’t you make your kid shut up” look people sometimes give.

Natalie sleeping in the Denver Airport

My dad met us at the airport and picked us up. It was a tiny airport, so the baggage car just drove out in the front of the airport and brought our luggage out. When we got to my parents house there were a lot of people waiting to meet us (well Natalie).

Natalie meeting Uncle Ryan

Carson and Katie before Church

Walking to Church

Carson was nice enough to share his swing with Natalie, she got so addicted to the swing that we bought one when we came home.

Katie wearing the monkey hat I made Carson:

Monday we went to Babies R Us and mom bought Katie some really cute and girly things. Katie loved the sunglasses and purse, but especially loved the angry birds fruit snacks (Carson loved them too).

Tuesday we went to the museum at Thanksgiving Point.

Katie was way more into the exhibits than Natalie šŸ˜‰

Natalie and Grandpa Frost

Ā Katie wasn’t sure she wanted to share Nicole.

Natalie kept getting her feet out of her blankets, then got frustrated.

Friday we all got to go to the temple together:

We went to IKEA and on the ride home Katie wanted to hold Natalie’s hand (and use Natalie’s pacifier, at least it was good for one kid).

Cruise Days 5 and 6

Fri ,03/06/2011

Day 5 was the last full day on the boat. I loved the towel animals, so Mike, Jen, Jordan and I took the towel folding class. Jordan was so good at folding the towels, and I really wanted the book so we bought it. Don’t be surprised if you come to our house to visit and you have a towel dog on your bed :).

There was a crazy watch sale and people were just buying a ton of stuff, it was so crowded that I didn’t get a picture, but it was like black friday in a room the size of a large bathroom.

Jordan and I played ping pong (I don’t think I got any better the entire cruise)

Day 6

When we woke up on Saturday there was a beautiful sunrise.

We thought it would take a while to get off the boat because we decided not to put our luggage out the night before, but it was actually faster to just get off the boat. We were some of the first people, and when we got to Customs, we just handed them our form and went to our car. Jordan and I couldn’t find Jen and Mike before we got off the boat and we really hoped they would leave the boat about the same time. Luckily they did and we got to our car, and left the parking lot before most of the other people had even left the boat. Then we drove home, the ride home was depressing because it was cold and there was a lot of snow. It made all of us miss the warm Mexican weather.

Cruise Day 4

Mon ,09/05/2011

This was probably my favorite day on the cruise. We got off the cruise ship early and it was so humid outside that the camera fogged up:

View photos at SmugMug

There was a giant cruise ship next to our, we had to take a picture of it so that way we could remember how big the other ship was:

View photos at SmugMug

We went on a “Deluxe Swim, Snorkel, & Beach Party” it was funny because the cruise line wouldn’t let me sign up for the majority of the excursions because I’m pregnant. So we signed up for the beach party and I didn’t get that we were going to snorkel on a reef, I thought it was just on the beach where the party was. So when we got on the catamaran and stopped near a reef and the guy said that we were going to snorkel for a while I was so excited. They made everyone wear life vests, but we didn’t have to blow them up:

View photos at SmugMug

I was the first one that jumped in the water :). We got a picture taken of us while we were underwater, and we bought it, but I didn’t scan it in. There were a ton of cool fish and the water was so warm.

View photos at SmugMug

(We are so white in this picture)

The people on the boat didn’t serve drinks until after we got back on the boat. There were a bunch of people that kept drinking beer and margaritas, I can’t believe how much people can drink early in the morning.

We got to the beach and there was a ton of fun things in the water. The first thing that we did was go on a kayak then we played in the water. Jordan liked the slide, he kept going down it:

There was dancing on the way back:

View photos at SmugMug

When we got back to the port we waited for the Armstrongs, but we didn’t know when their scuba diving excursion, so we waited for them a bit. After we waited, we went back on the boat and got some food to eat then waited for them again. After a while we just went shopping. Jordan wanted a cool looking chess set, so we went to a couple of stores to find one. We went to this store and Jordan told the guy that he liked pieces from one but didn’t like the board. So the guy carried a different board over there and Jordan ended up getting a $50 set instead for $25. Jordan bought me some pearls for my birthday that I wore at dinner later on the cruise. We walked to a bunch of stores and picked the best smelling mexican vanilla.

Eventually we met up with Jen and Mike and went shopping with them. I walked around with Jen and we went to a bunch of stores. Jordan and Mike had to go pick up Jen and Mike’s HD nature video from their dive. One really funny thing that happened is that Jordan and I bought some vanilla from a store and we thought they charged us in pesos and a bunch of ladies from the store came up to me and Jen and kept speaking to us in spanish. With our limited (very limited) knowledge of spanish, we finally figured out what was going on. Jen and I followed them back to the store and then we figured out what was going on. They ended up charging us $316.80 instead of $31.68. When we finally got the charges fixed and then we left the store (after we bought this cute elephant wind chime for our baby’s room). Apparently Jordan and Mike were sitting there watching us the entire time but didn’t help us (Mike actually speaks spanish).

We walked by this place with really pretty necklaces:

View photos at SmugMug

I think that necklace was $250, but it looked really nice on Jen. A random guy at the store stopped Jen to tell her she looked like a mermaid.

We got back on the boat and played ping pong and chess and had lots of fun. We were watching these people get in the hot tub. I think they were trying to get as many people as possible in the hot tub. The server I’m sure loved it because he kept selling drinks to the people in the hot tub.

When we were in our room, I opened up the closet and there was a beautiful white dress that I had seen in one of the stores. Jordan and bought it and surprised me with it on the boat. I wore it the next night to dinner.

The lights on the shore were really pretty:

Cruise Day 3

Sun ,08/05/2011

We woke up early on the third day because we were so excited about our excursion we were going on. Jordan went running on the track again, and I took some great pictures of the sunrise:

View photos at SmugMug

Here’s me trying to take a picture of myself:

View photos at SmugMug

It was cool to watch the boat get closer and closer to the land and eventually dock. I couldn’t believe how flat it is there and how beautiful the ocean was. We were in a big hurry that morning because our excursion was the longest one on the cruise because it required some travel. So we went to the buffet (where I saw the bacon lady again) and got breakfast. I also took some rolls, cereal, and a banana in my backpack for later, even though our excursion provided lunch. When we were getting off the boat I realized that I probably couldn’t bring the banana into Mexico, so I left it in our room. We hurried off the boat, which looked huge when we got off:

View photos at SmugMug

We got off the boat and there were a ton of people to take your picture, there are always people who want to take your picture so they can sell it to you on the boat. The first thing that someone offered us when we got onto Mexican soil was cuban cigars, and not just one person. I thought that was pretty funny. Jordan and I were some of the first people at the bus to our excursion, but Jen and Mike weren’t there yet. We waited for them and I asked the bus driver if he had seen them. when I described Jen, he said, “No, I would remember someone like that”. So when they did come most the other buses had left :S (we were suppose to be the first). So we were off! The trip was 2.5 hours away, but we stopped half an hour in at this gift shop that had lots of expensive things. Jen though the loom was pretty cool:

Here’s me and Jordan on the Bus:

We drove through a bunch of tiny towns where most of the buildings had palm leaf roofs, but most of the houses seemed to have satellites, which I don’t really understand. Here are some funny things we saw in those towns:

I love it, Ancient Mayan McDonalds and across the street:

View photos at SmugMug

Chitzen Itza was so cool! It was so neat how the tour guide would clap and we could hear it all around us, that’s some awesome ancient engineering!

View photos at SmugMug

The trees had weird plants growing in them. The guide explained that the water is all in wells, that there is no surface water, so there are no misquotes (which is super nice).

Here are the cool towers that other people would repeat what was being said from the main pyramid:

Here’s the hoop that the warriors had to get the ball through so they didn’t die:

View photos at SmugMug

and part of a cool rock carving that depicts the warriors preparing to play:

View photos at SmugMug

There are a ton of people selling stuff all around and they come up to you and say “One dollar, one dollar” when it actually isn’t a dollar. Some tourists are stupid, like a lady in our group who took out all her money when she was bargaining and all of a sudden the guy’s price went from $20 to $50. There were a couple of things that I really liked. There were some beautiful baby dresses and really cool wood carvings. I saw these monkeys and just thought they were adorable.

View photos at SmugMug

Initially we walked away because the monkeys we thought they were too expensive, but we went back and bargained for them and got them. I can’t wait hang them in our baby’s room.

We eventually got to explore on our own. Jen and Mike had been there before and said that a lot more had been roped off, probably for preservation purposes. Here we are in front of another structure:

and us in front of the main pyramid:

Look, ancient tick tack toe:

I was trying to get a picture of how steep and narrow the stairs are:

On the way back to the cruise ship, Jen and Mike asked the tour guide to stop so they could buy a hammock.

We were the last excursion to get back to the boat, and when we got back on the boat it rained really hard and it was really cool because it was hot outside. We ate when we got back on the boat and so we ate dinner a lot later than we did on most nights. We waited a while then went to dinner with the Armstrongs. When we got back to our room there was a towel frog:

Cruise Day 2

Sat ,23/04/2011

The second day of the cruise was all at sea, we were traveling to Mexico and it takes a while :). There was this cool channel on the TV that would show you the approximate location of the boat then zoom in and out on the map. Jordan wanted to go running on the track that morning so we woke up early to do that and get down to the restaurant for breakfast.

I think I forgot to mention that the first night I fell asleep during the show and eventually just came back to the room and went to sleep before Jordan got there. Anyway, the next morning we woke up and the weather was beautiful!

View photos at SmugMug

The previous day it had been kind of cold (nothing like the snowstorms that had been here though). It was a little windy, but just a balmy breeze. Jordan ran on the track (I walked) and eventually Jen and Mike came too (Jen had a hard time sleeping on the boat).

View photos at SmugMug

Jen has a really funny story about the lady next to her in this picture:

View photos at SmugMug

I don’t think I could tell it as well as her, so I’m going to email her and ask her to tell it (it is hilarious, I promise). Jordan and I finished before Jen and Mike so we went downstairs to the buffet to get something quick (like toast or something) then meet them at the restaurant for breakfast.

Just as a quick side note, the week we were on our cruise was the first week since I got pregnant that I didn’t throw up and wasn’t congested, it was amazing!

Okay back to the story, so we went to the buffet and I got in line so I could get a crescent or some other kind of bread and so I got a plate (I didn’t know they were at the end of the line). Now, you have to understand that most of the people working on the cruise work several months away from their families (who usually live in other countries). The server, who happened to be a very thin man from Mongolia, asked the lady in front of me if she wanted some bacon. She said yes, so she handed him her plate, he put a couple of pieces on it, and she said, “No, I want a whole plate of bacon”.Ā  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, I wanted to bust out laughing because the server looked very surprised at this request. The best part was that the same thing happened again the next day.

So I got my roll and met Jordan on the deck above the restaurant we were meeting the Armstrongs, they took a little longer than we expected, and we were afraid that we wouldn’t get to eat there, so we sat down. I was excited because I could have breakfast sausage (even as much as I wanted!). We got something off the menu and then we saw the Armstrongs. We played mini-golf which I am quite possibly the worst at ever (the rocking boat didn’t help at all), I think Mike won.

View photos at SmugMug

After mini-golf we went on the “Adult Only” Deck (don’t worry there wasn’t anything scandalous there, just no kids allowed). We brought books to read, but just enjoyed the view of the ocean:

Then we went to lunch (we’re going to mention food a lot on these posts, come on have you seen WALLE?). Here’s Jen and Mike before we got our food:

After Lunch we played cards for a bit and went to an art auction. Somewhere between all of this Jordan and Mike played ping pong. We were not suppose to take pictures, but I thought this was hilarious:

If you click on the picture it looks like the statue is reaching to pat her back or push her over. Jordan and I bought some artwork which we still have to frame and put in our house somewhere, good thing there are lots of empty walls.

We spent more time outside, I think everyone else got in the hot tubs. That night was formal night so we got to get dressed up and look pretty. This was at the, normal clothes don’t fit very well, but maternity clothes are still huge stage, so I had no desire to find a formal dress. Jordan looked good (you can tell he got a little sun that day):

Jen didn’t know that she was going to get an entire cornish game hen when she ordered her food (this was just after her telling about how she served half chickens at a restaurant she worked at). Then our server didn’t think she ate enough, so he brought her two desserts:

Cruise Day 1

Fri ,08/04/2011

Jordan knew that I’ve wanted to go on a cruise for a long time, we’ve just never had the vacation time to go on one. So one morning when I was at work Jordan chatted:

Jordan: emily you there?
me: yep, how are you doing?
Jordan: hey so…I actually have to go panel but what would you say if I said I just found a cruise for after taxes 500 bucks for the both of us for a 5 night in Feb 7

Then Jordan went back to work. I’m thinking, of course I want to do that. I knew there were some restrictions with pregnancy and how far along you could be on a cruise, so we did some research on that, and we were fine. (FYI you can’t be more than 24 weeks along, and you have to get the doctor to sign a paper saying you can go). So we decided we wanted to go. It is even more awesome because Mobile, AL is a port city that cruise ships leave from and it is only 10 hours away!

We wanted to see if our friends (the Armstrongs) could go on it also, because we thought it would be more fun with them. Mike seemed optimistic about it and then proceeded to get some time off of clinical work and Jen looked for someone to stay with their kids for the week. Jen’s mom was awesome and said she could stay with their kids. So we booked our cruise and waited for them to book theirs. After a couple of days and a ton (this is an understatement) of stress that they wouldn’t get on the same cruise as us, they booked it.

We left Sunday after church and drove to Jackson, MS and stayed the night in an extended stay hotel. Here’s something funny that happened, Jen called ahead to book the hotel room, but forgot to say there were 4 of us, so when got in the room and there was one bed and a pull out bed. Jordan drove the whole way to Jackson, and laid down sideways on the bed and fell asleep. Once an exhausted Jordan is asleep, there is no way to wake him up. After a lot of coaxing, he finally turned the right way and got under the sheets. He honestly didn’t remember falling asleep when he woke up the next morning.

The next morning we got ready to go, but not too early, we had to be at the port by early afternoon, so we had plenty of time. When we got to Mobile, we were following the GPS and it gave us weird directions (which were right) and so Jordan tried to turn on his own, but it you couldn’t turn into the cruise parking lot from that direction, so we ended up getting back on the freeway and then getting to the parking lot. We parked the car, when through all the security stuff (which you can’t take pictures of).

The best part about the cruise was the food, you can eat as much as you want any time of day. So the first thing we did on the boat was put our stuff in our room, explored the boat, tried to find the Armstrongs, then tried to find a place to eat (we hadn’t eaten lunch yet), so we went to the Tiffany Restaurant, the dining room with the buffet.

After Eating, we explored the boat with the Armstrongs and did some mandatory safety stuff:

The sunsets were beautiful.

(on a side note, I thought i was big then… wow, I’ve gotten bigger in the past two months)

Jordan and Mike played this quiz show game. Mike won and got this weird plastic boat trophy, and Jordan played the second round and somehow the girl in the center won (I think the cruise ship guy was a little bias). Here’s a picture of Mike doing the I’m a little Teapot Dance:

Jordan playing:

And here is a link to hilarious video of Jordan Dancing to YMCA. It is worth the 15 seconds it takes to click and watch :).

Our dining assignments were different so we couldn’t eat in the fancy restaurant that night, so we requested that we eat together, and ate at the buffet. Jordan also got some sushi and then dumped soy sauce on me (gross), so I didn’t wear those pants the whole cruise because I smelled like soy sauce.

We went to a show that was kind of like a variety show. It was pretty impressive that the dancers could do tricks on the stage without falling over, because the boat was rocking so much.Ā  When we got back to our room, there was a cute towel dog folded for us:

IFT in the Windy City Part 1

Sun ,19/09/2010

One of the benefits of being in the same field of employment is thatĀ  we both get to go to the same conventions and other work things. This year the IFT annual convention was in Chicago and we both got to go. Jordan found an amazing deal on tickets and the hotel. Part of this great deal that he got required us to go to Chicago a day earlier than the convention stared, darn…

So we flew out early Saturday morning and got to our hotel, the Palmer House, before 9a. On a side note, it took us a while to get to the hotel because they were filming Transformers 3, so roads were closed and movable bridges were up so we had to go on the scenic route, but we didn’t mind. We couldn’t check in until that afternoon, but they had a great service that allowed us to leave our baggage at the hotel and they would take it to our room when we checked in.

With plenty of time to spend around Chicago we started to plan what we wanted to do. The first thing we did was stop and get breakfast at this cute little corner bistro. On the way in this guy tried to hand us a map/newspaper and I thought they were free but as soon as he handed us one he said we needed us to pay a “donation” for the newspaper, so I handed it back. (Oops). The he started to follow us into the restaurant, double oops. So we decided that we wanted to go Millennial Park by the Chicago Art Institute, Navy Pier, and the Shedd Aquarium. So we started walking.

We walked from the Hotel to Millennial Park and there were hundreds of people doing Yoga. Apparently there is free yoga every Saturday, pretty cool. We walked through the park to Navy Pier. For anyone who is wondering, it may seem pretty simple to walk from the hotel to the Pier, but it’s not. There are lots of trails that are in the park that just kind of end.

So we finally got to Navy Pier, but the stores didn’t open until 11, and we got there before 11a so we just walked around. It was pretty cool, but not that exciting because everything was closed.

View photos at SmugMug

After walking around the pier we decided that we were going to take a water taxi to the Aquarium. The water taxi was really cool because we got to see unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline. When we got to the Aquarium there was a huge line. We waited about an hour to get in, but it was worth it.

They had a lot of exhibits open, but my favorites were the jellyfish, the clownfish, and the baby manatee. The penguins were pretty funny too.

We stayed at the Aquarium a long timeĀ  then we walked back to our hotel. On the way back we passed this huge party by a giant fountain. After we got back to the hotel we checked in and asked the Concierge where a good place to get authentic Chicago style pizza was. He said that a local favorite is Pizano’s. So we called and got a reservation, but the earliest one was at 9p (we called at 5). We decided we were really hungry so we just walked there.

When we got there they told us that it takes an hour for them to make the food because the pizzas are made to order, so we put in our order before we sat down and waited. We waited an hour and 45 minutes before we got our pizza because the waitress forgot to put the order in. It was really good pizza, but I still think I like New York style better.
