Table Rock Lake – Canoeing

Sat ,22/05/2010

So we finally got car racks for our toyota corolla so we could attach the canoe that Emily’s parents gave us to the car.  On April 17th and 18th, we went canoeing on the Table Rock Lake.  We had a blast!  It was so beautiful.  I kind of did underestimate the distance of the canoeing.  We ended up going about 8 miles each way.  We started at Cape Fair public use area and canoed into the Piney Creek Wilderness area.  There was a perfect campsite which was at the base of the trail that leads into the wilderness area.  In the morning, when we started canoeing again, it was so pretty.  It has gotten below freezing during the night and so there was tons of steam on the lake and it was really pretty.  There weren’t very many people on the lake, probably due to it not being “perfect” weather.  Emily was a real sport going with me.

Hercules Glade Wilderness Area

Sat ,22/05/2010

On March 19th to the 20th, we wanted to go camping (well, probably mostly me) and so we went to Hercules Glade Wilderness area.  We didn’t do any hiking but since we haven’t been there for a while, we decided to go.  Emily packed a wonderful meal with dessert.  It was fun.

Talbot Conservation Area

Fri ,21/05/2010

March 5th to 6th, we went to the Talbot Conservation area on the Spring River Nature Trail that is there.  We hiked the trail which was really pretty.  There were overlook areas to the river which were pretty.  After hiking, we camped in the conservation area’s camping area.  We were the only ones there.  We ended up forgetting our stove’s fuel so we couldn’t cook anything but fortunately we also brought Emily’s homemade crackers and cheeseball so we were fine.  We ended up sleeping in the car and probably didn’t get the best night’s sleep ever.  But it was a fun time.

Chickens

Thu ,20/05/2010

Here are more pictures of my cute chickens. We took some of these pictures before Blackie and Zebra died.

We put the chickens out in their coop in late March/early April. They really liked being outside and really liked their coop. We usually check them in the morning, but I’ve been going to work early and so I would check them during the day when I got back from work. Well I came home on and our lawn really needed to be mowed, so I started mowing the front lawn and there was a clump of zebra feathers and I didn’t really think anything of it. There was no way the chickens could get out. So I kept mowing. Then I went to the backyard and mowed by the coup, and saw lots of zebra feathers. :(. Then I noticed there were only 3 chickens. Then the other black one turned and I noticed it didn’t have a wing because the bone was sticking out and it was bleeding and that made me want to throw up.

So when Jordan got home he took care of the coup by adding more rabbit wire and he put the badly hurt one in it’s own box. I opened the little door to check on the other ones and they jumped on me and didn’t want to go back in their house :(. Then one tried to jump to Jordan and scratched my eye with it’s claw. So we put the other ones in a box in the garage for the night, but they’re back outside today. Hopefully they are okay. I was pretty upset, I’m still sad about it, but there’s not much we can do. We think it was a racoon, because it could have climbed the fence and has the strength to break chicken wire.

Who knew racoons were so evil. The one on Pocahontas was so nice…

We reinforced the chicken coup and bought some more chickens from a relative of a lady in our ward, so now we’re getting eggs. I still miss my fancy chickens, it’s too bad they died. We had to separate the little chickens from the big ones because the big ones were beating up the little ones, so now we have a coop and a little box for the babies. I just hope no more die.

Tulips

I love tulips, so we planted 110 bulbs. Here are some pictures:

Garden Revamp

Tue ,18/05/2010

Jordan and I were so excited about our garden this year, so when we started planting we figured out that it was going to be pretty hard to mow close to the boxes. So we decided to landscape around them. We thought it would look nice and make our lives easier. If you watch closely you can see the tulips growing and all the different colors.

Once we were done we expanded our garden and we’ll put more pictures of that on later. We added more boxes and extended it closer to the fence. We wanted to have grapes and berries too, so the sooner you plant the sooner you get to eat them :D.

Jordan’s Birthday and Frisbee Golf

Mon ,17/05/2010

Yay, Jordan had a birthday!

Jordan had a great birthday this year. We had a yummy ice cream cake and a good dinner. The weekend before we went to REI in St Louis and picked up our car top carrier.

We bought frisbee golf disks while we were there and played that the day after Jordan’s birthday. There’s a frisbee golf course by our house away, so we can go pretty often.

Well, I’m awful at frisbee golf, it’s nothing like playing Wii Resort, too bad. If you watch the video you can see pretty much how the whole night went. Luckily, I’ve gotten better, not much, but at least I get the frisbee more than 10 ft away from us.

Easter 2010

Sun ,16/05/2010

Easter happened on Conference weekend this year. We went out to check out our garden and there was a bunny in it. UGH!

View photos at SmugMug

I know what you’re thinking, aww cute bunny…WRONG! Not cute, not fun, not good. Bunnies eat gardens which kind of defeats the purpose of growing  one.  So we spent several hours trying to figure out how to chase it out of our yard. The bunny kept running under the deck, and then we couldn’t get it. We finally got it out and then a couple of days later it was back. We finally got it gone for good when we filled in all the holes with top soil. We have yet to see it again, but if we do…it’ll be sorry it ever came back in our yard.

On a happier, prettier note, the flowers in those pictures were on sale at Lowe’s for 33 cents each. So I bought them because they were almost flowering and tulips are my favorite flower. I came down on Easter to have a bunch of flowers that weren’t there the night before. It was a good surprise.

Building Chicken Coop

Sat ,15/05/2010

Jordan designed this coop for our chickens. We wanted to design one that would be clean and that would protect our chickens (apparently chicken wire doesn’t keep out pests, it only keeps in chickens). We put a screen under the coop and a door with a latch for the covered part of their house.

St. Patrick’s Day 2010

Sat ,15/05/2010

Jordan and I took a page out of Justin and Julie’s book and had a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner this year. Complete with Irish Soda Bread, Corn Beef, and Cabbage. We even made green Mint Oreo ice cream. We liked it, but it was a lot of food for just the two of us. We’ll probably do it again next year and invite other people to eat with us. :)
